Hand Trauma & Fracture Surgery | Dr. Pawan Shahane | Nagpur

Precision. Dexterity. Restoration.

Restoring the Masterpiece of the Human Hand.

The hand is a marvel of complex biomechanics. Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Pawan Shahane applies elite microsurgical techniques to repair shattered bones, severed tendons, and crushed tissue, giving you back your grip and your independence.

Emergency Trauma Contact

Why a Plastic Surgeon for Hand Injuries?

Many people assume broken hands belong exclusively to orthopedic surgeons. However, the hand is not just bone. In an incredibly small space, the hand houses a dense network of tiny blood vessels, delicate nerves, gliding tendons, and specialized skin. A severe injury rarely damages just the bone.

As an M.Ch. Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Pawan Shahane is trained not only to fix the skeletal framework but to perform complex microsurgery on the surrounding soft tissue. This holistic approach is essential. If a bone heals perfectly but the overlying tendon is scarred or the blood supply is compromised, the hand will not function. We focus on total restoration.

"Our hands are our primary tools for interacting with the world. Reconstructive hand surgery is a commitment to returning a patient to their livelihood and their passions."

Comprehensive Hand Repair

From simple fractures to devastating crush injuries.

Hand Bone Fractures

Metacarpal & Finger Fractures

Using ultra-low-profile titanium mini-plates or specialized K-wires, we rigidly fix broken bones in the hand and fingers, allowing for early movement to prevent permanent stiffness.

Tendon and Soft Tissue

Crush Injuries & Soft Tissue Loss

Industrial accidents or heavy impacts can destroy skin and muscle. We utilize advanced tissue flaps and skin grafting to cover exposed bones and joints, salvaging severely traumatized hands.

Replantation and Nerve Repair

Finger Amputation & Replantation

In emergencies where a digit is completely severed, Dr. Pawan uses high-powered microscopes to reattach arteries and veins less than 1mm in diameter, striving to save the finger.

Microsurgery Techniques

The Crucial Role of Microsurgery

The difference between a hand that looks normal and a hand that works normally lies in the microscopic details.

Nerve Repair

A severed nerve in the finger leads to permanent numbness and risk of burn injuries. We carefully stitch the nerve ends together under magnification to encourage sensation to return.

Vascular Anastomosis

If blood supply to the hand or a finger is cut off, tissue dies rapidly. Emergency micro-vascular repair connects tiny arteries to restore life-saving blood flow to the extremity.

Tendon Gliding

Repaired tendons naturally want to stick to the surrounding tissue, causing stiffness. We use specialized core suturing techniques that are strong enough to allow you to start physical therapy safely just days after surgery.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Will I need physical therapy?
Absolutely. Hand surgery is a 50/50 partnership. Dr. Pawan performs the structural repair, but rigorous hand physiotherapy is mandatory to prevent scar tissue from "freezing" your joints. We will guide you through a strict exercise protocol.
Will I have to wear a cast?
Instead of heavy, restrictive plaster casts, we typically use custom-molded thermoplastic splints. These protect the surgical repair while allowing you to safely remove them for your prescribed rehabilitation exercises and hygiene.
If pins/wires are used, how are they removed?
If K-wires (smooth metal pins) are used to hold finger bones straight, they usually remain in place for 3 to 6 weeks. They protrude slightly through the skin and can be removed quickly and with minimal discomfort right in the clinicβ€”no second surgery required.
How long until I can return to work?
This depends heavily on your profession. Desk work may resume in a week or two with a splint. However, heavy manual labor, construction, or sports that strain the hand may require 8 to 12 weeks of healing and intense rehabilitation.
