How to Prepare for Your NT Scan at Mayflower Clinic: A Practical Guide

By Dr. Kunda Shahane | Fetal Medicine Specialist, Nagpur

You have hit the 11-week milestone, and your obstetrician has scheduled your crucial First Trimester Screening. If you are like most expectant mothers walking through the doors of our fetal medicine clinic in Nagpur, you are probably feeling a mixture of intense excitement and understandable anxiety.

At Mayflower Clinic, our goal is to make this experience as smooth, comfortable, and joy-filled as possible. The NT (Nuchal Translucency) scan requires precision, and a little bit of preparation on your part can significantly help our Fetal Medicine team get the clearest, most accurate images of your baby.

To help alleviate the pre-appointment jitters, here is your complete, step-by-step guide on exact NT scan preparation, what to bring, and what to expect on the day of your visit.

1. The Big Question: Do I Need a Full Bladder?

This is the most common question our reception desk receives. The short answer is: Yes, but do not overdo it.

During the first trimester, your uterus is still tucked relatively low in your pelvis, slightly behind your bowel. Sound waves from the ultrasound probe do not travel well through air or gas in the bowel. A comfortably full bladder acts as a liquid window; it pushes the bowel up and out of the way, giving us a crystal-clear view of the uterus.

The Ideal Hydration Timeline:

  • Empty your bladder completely about 1.5 to 2 hours before your appointment.
  • Over the next hour, drink approximately 3 to 4 glasses (about 750ml) of water or clear fluids.
  • Stop drinking 30 minutes before your scan.

A note on Nagpur's climate: Central India’s heat can cause you to sweat out fluids rapidly before you even reach the clinic in Dhantoli. Keep sipping water during your commute. However, if your bladder is so full that it is causing you sharp pain, please tell our staff immediately. We can allow you to partially empty it so you remain comfortable during the 30-minute scan.

2. Food and Fasting: Eat a Good Meal!

There is a persistent myth that you need to fast for ultrasound scans or the accompanying Double Marker blood test. This is absolutely false.

You do not need to fast for an NT scan. In fact, we strongly encourage you to eat a normal, healthy meal or a good snack about 45 minutes before your appointment. When your blood sugar is slightly elevated, the baby tends to be more active. To measure the nuchal translucency accurately, we need the baby in a very specific, neutral profile position. An active baby makes it much easier for the sonographer to capture the perfect angle.

Pro Tip: Bring a small piece of chocolate or a sweet juice box in your purse. If the baby is fast asleep during the scan, a quick dose of sugar can sometimes encourage them to wake up and move into the correct position!

3. What to Wear for Maximum Comfort

For an NT scan, the ultrasound probe will be moved across your lower abdomen, from your pelvic bone up to your belly button.

  • Wear two-piece clothing: A comfortable loose top/kurti and maternity pants, leggings, or a loose salwar. This allows us to easily expose your lower abdomen without you having to undress completely.
  • Avoid tight jeans or one-piece dresses: One-piece outfits will require you to change into a hospital gown, which can be cumbersome.
  • Expect a little mess: We use a generous amount of water-based, hypoallergenic ultrasound gel to ensure good contact between the probe and your skin. While we provide soft towels to wipe it off afterward, it is best not to wear expensive silk or easily stained fabrics just in case a drop gets on your waistband.
The Mayflower Clinic Advantage:

While most NT scans are performed transabdominally, occasionally (due to the position of your uterus or the baby) we may need to perform a brief Transvaginal Scan (TVS) to get a better look at early fetal structures. Wearing easy-to-remove lower garments makes this transition smooth and stress-free.

4. What to Bring to Your Appointment

Having your paperwork in order helps us streamline your registration process, getting you into the consultation room faster.

  • Your Doctor's Prescription: The referral slip from your primary obstetrician detailing exactly what scans and blood tests are required.
  • Previous Ultrasound Reports: If you had an early dating/viability scan at 6-8 weeks (even if it was done at another clinic), please bring those reports and images. The Crown-Rump Length (CRL) from that early scan is vital for confirming your exact gestational age.
  • A Support Person: This is a major milestone. We welcome and encourage you to bring your partner, mother, or a close friend to share the joy of seeing your baby on our high-definition monitors.

5. The Timeline: What to Expect on the Day

Patience is the final, and perhaps most important, thing you need to bring. Unlike an adult X-ray where we simply ask you to hold your breath, a fetal ultrasound depends entirely on the cooperation of your unborn baby.

  1. Arrival & Intake: Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any necessary registration forms.
  2. The Scan (20 to 45 minutes): Once in the room, Dr. Kunda Shahane will begin the ultrasound. If the baby is in a perfect position, the measurements can take 20 minutes. However, if the baby is facing the wrong way or curled up tightly, the scan will take longer. We might ask you to cough gently, walk around the clinic for 10 minutes, or eat your sweet snack to get the baby to shift positions. Do not panic if the scan takes a long time; it just means we are waiting for the baby to pose!
  3. The Blood Draw: Immediately following the ultrasound, if you are opting for the First Trimester Combined Screening, our phlebotomist will take a small sample of blood for the Double Marker or NIPT test.
  4. Counseling: Before you leave, Dr. Shahane will discuss the immediate ultrasound findings with you, explaining everything clearly so you walk out with answers, not anxiety.
